Struggling With Pain That Won’t Go Away? Let’s FIX it

I’m Ronnie Kiek, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and owner of ValleyFIX PT, a concierge mobile physical therapy service in the Vail Valley. As a three-time World Championship ski competitor, I’ve faced my battles with pain and understand how frustrating it can be when it lingers. Now, I use my expertise to help others—whether they’re dealing with persistent pain, recovering from injury, or looking to perform their best—so they can stay active and enjoy the mountain lifestyle regardless of age or ability.

Pain doesn’t just limit movement—it creates a cycle. When pain keeps us from the activities we love, we move less. Over time, this leads to decreased energy, muscle atrophy, and even greater discomfort. As our bodies weaken, pain persists, and the frustration takes a toll on both mental and emotional well-being. Over time, this cycle can lead to lasting changes in how our nervous system processes pain, making recovery even harder.

Here are some fundamental recommendations on how to approach & manage persistent pain:

1️⃣ Work with a provider who listens, is patient, and cares. Recovery takes time, and support matters.
2️⃣ Modify activities instead of avoiding them. Staying active in pain-free ways is an important component of success. If you are not sure how to approach this, you should seek guidance.
3️⃣ Gradually reintroduce movement. Slow, steady exposure helps your nervous system to adapt and decrease pain.
4️⃣ Work with a provider who emphasizes education. Understanding the nervous system and pain science can help you gain control of your body and take an active role in rehabilitation.
5️⃣ Incorporate diaphragmatic breathing. Decreasing your nervous system reduces both physical and mental stress. (This is not suitable for everyone; consult a healthcare provider if you have a medical condition.)
6️⃣ Prioritize quality sleep and stress management. Guidance on sleep and stress strategies plays a big role in pain management.
7️⃣ Seek longer sessions (60–90 minutes) for more thorough care and personalized treatment.
8️⃣ Stay hydrated and be aware of your nutrition intake. Proper hydration and nutrition are essential for recovery.
9️⃣ Don’t give up. The right guidance makes a difference—relief and progress are possible but require patience and consistency.
